A VERY rare Volkswagen fire truck has been put up for auction at an incredibly low price despite its great condition.

The vintage motor comes almost fully equipped with hoses, a water pump, spotlight and horn.

It even boasts all the key fire-fighting equipment and old-school uniforms.

According to the listing, the fire truck is a 1959 Volkswagen Type 2 and was reportedly used by the Kirchheim unter Teck fire department in Germany for over 40 years.

One lucky punter can snap up a bargain on the fire truck as the current highest bid is just under £12,000 with two days left on the popular listing.

Painted a classic red colour the truck is powered by a 1.2litre flat-four engine and has a four-speed manual transaxle.

With 14inch steel wheels, trafficators, a front spotlight, Bosch horns, a blue Hella emergency light and a roof rack the truck is still fully operational.

There is also a Magirus water pump, wooden rear bench and a single rear jump seat all once used by the local firefighters.

It is being sold out of Denver, Colorado, and comes with all the classic fire-fighting gear and uniforms, a service manual, literature from the time and recent service records.

And with under 17,000 miles visible on the clock it's certainly a prized collector's item.

Many were left so impressed by the classic motor that they were shocked it was allowed to be put up for sale.

They thought it should be parked up in a museum somewhere.

One person wrote: "Worthy of a museum, for its conservation and history. It’s amazing."

A second echoed these thoughts, saying: "Dang. It really belongs in a museum. Will be interesting to see how this does. It’s super cool."

Before a third chimed in: "This is so complete and well preserved I’m surprised Volkswagen doesn’t have it in their museum in Wolfsburg."

Another simply called it "amazing".

The truck will be sold on auction site Bring A Trailer and has already been viewed by more than 6,100 people.

It has seen five people bid on it already.

Cars with an interesting backstory have been rapidly going on sale in the last few weeks.

And a historic Ferrari that's undergone an £800,000 restoration is heading to auction after an incredible history as a successful race car - including being part of the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race.

The gorgeous motor, finished in bright yellow with a black Ferrari logo on the side and a huge number 11 sticker on the bonnet, goes under the hammer at RM Sotheby’s Paris auction later this month.
